Anna Friedland is an artist and student living in San Francisco. She is a post media artist—she first decides on her concept and then chooses the medium/media that best communicates it. Currently, she is preoccupied with pattern—its aesthetic and conceptual possibilities. She is especially inspired by the master of pattern—nature—with its repetitive marks and beautiful lines. Friedland’s style is a mix of extremes: straight and curvy, traditional and modern, minimalist and decorative, modest and bold, natural and manmade, representational and abstract, alive and dead. The underlying theme of her work is “aliveness”—the quality of having great energy, passion, and interest. She feels that dance best embodies this concept, and it is becoming the subject of more and more of her work. Most recently she has started dabbling with video—a moving medium for her moving subjects.
